Strategy for West—Carter Fades Away—Jihadism as Ideology

Middle East Strategy for the West

“The great battle of our younger years was between Communism and democratic liberalism. Its contemporary equivalent is Arab nationalism versus Islamism.

That implies some extremely important, often misunderstood, conclusions:

First, regrettably but true, democracy isn’t in the running. The problem is not just that cynical rulers mislead the masses through demagoguery-though that’s true; it’s that the masses embrace extremist world views.” Read more

Carter Fades Away at Democratic Convention

“DENVER — Poof. Just like that, he was gone.

With all the focus on Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama’s speeches before a roused audience last night, little attention was given to Jimmy Carter, who also appeared on the stage at the Pepsi Center on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention. This was by design.

In the four years since the former Democratic president took the stage in Boston in 2004, 14 members of his Carter Center resigned in protest after he published a book comparing Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians to the treatment of blacks in South Africa under apartheid, and he’s met with top leaders of the terrorist group Hamas.” Read more

Jihadism: Ideology as Well as Theology

“Jihadism is putting significant pressure on European foreign policy regarding where and when Europe can intervene in an international crisis such as those in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Darfur. It is also putting pressure on the European economy through the choices made in foreign policies. But the inability to explain these pressures is a major reason behind the strategic failure in containing and reversing the threat which continues to expand and grow across the continent…

“…a European priority should be to support pro-democracy forces inside the Muslim communities so that these communities are better protected against racism and back-clashes on the one hand, and are freed from control by the Jihadists on the other hand.” Read more

Plans for Memorial to Victims of Munich Olympics Massacre

“Why are there people who don’t know what happened at the 1972 Munich Olympics?
How is it that there are people who watched the Beijing Olympic games, and have no idea that armed Palestinian terrorists snuck into the Israeli Olympic housing complex in the middle of the night and massacred 11 members its delegation 36 years ago?
Perhaps it’s because no memorial to this horror has been made part of the Olympics tradition, despite years of trying, that’s allowed this terrible tragedy to slip from the collective consciousness.” Read more

Al Jazeera Owes an Apology Says Father of Daniel Pearl

“…the royal procession of Samir Kuntar brought barbarism back to the public square… One by one, the whole Lebanese leadership stepped up to “brother Kuntar” to shake the hand and kiss the cheeks of that arch-symbol of barbarity… he focus of my attention naturally turned to Al Jazeera because, with its outreach of 50 million to 100 million viewers from Morocco to the Persian Gulf, this pan-Arab satellite channel is considered the conscience and future of the Arab world… Imagine a voice cast in a perfect Oxford accent articulating in unmistaken empathy: He has returned to a hero’s welcome Read more

Al Qaeda at 20: Dead or Alive?

“Two decades after al-Qaeda was founded in the Pakistani border city of Peshawar by Osama bin Laden and a handful of veterans of the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, the group is more famous and feared than ever. But its grand project — to transform the Muslim world into a militant Islamist caliphate — has been, by any measure, a resounding failure… At 20, al-Qaeda is losing its war, but its influence will live on. As Michael Scheuer, who founded the CIA’s bin Laden unit in 1996, points out, Their mission is accomplished: worldwide instigation and inspiration. To our grief, that legacy will endure, even after al-Qaeda is defeated.” Read this analysis in its entirety.

New Palestinian Refugees—-Saudis Not Liable for 9/11 Attacks—Al Qaeda’s New Face

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Melanie Phillips on New Meaning to Term “Palestinian Refugees”

“Extraordinary developments in Gaza have given a new meaning to the term ‘Palestinian refugees’. As the Jerusalem Post reports, fierce fighting in Gaza between Fatah and Hamas over the weekend, in which 11 people died and dozens more were wounded, resulted in 180 Fatah refugees fleeing from what they called a ‘war of genocide’ by Hamas against Fatah supporters. And where did they flee to? Why, to Israel, of course…

So let’s get our head round this: Palestinians committed to the destruction of Israel fled from other Palestinians committed to the destruction of Israel into Israel, which is providing them with sanctuary and medical treatment, while the president of their putative state who bases his claim against Israel on its alleged refusal to admit Palestinian ‘refugees’ refused to allow actual Palestinian refugees fleeing Palestinian violence access to that same putative state, while Israel agonises over whether to grant them permanent asylum. Surreal, or what?” Read more

Dialogue on Jewish Self-Hatred

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Alert friend Elaine Sandler read a Caroline Glick column in the Jerusalem Post which resonated with Sandler who has long been concerned with the role that the phenomenon of Jewish self-hatred plays in Jewish perspectives on Israel. Below are Sandler’s thoughts on the subject:

Jews excel at promoting aberrant pathological constructs predicated on the destruction of their own people. It is perhaps the most insidious and lethal form of anti-Semitism — a disturbing largely unconscious and unexamined depression we suffer in which we direct our long festering rage and self-loathing inward.

This hatred is one of the biggest threats we face. Jews, many powerful, both Israeli and American, manifest this disturbing phenomenon in Universities, the breeding grounds for such grotesque distortions in thinking that filter down and get absorbed in Jewish minds. Powerful Jews in Hollywood do it. We’ve become, in effect, our own enemy. It hurts the well-intentioned Jews who care deeply for the things that genuinely need to matter and we wince when we read Glick commentaries that highlight its course.

It’s a pathology that deserves a scientific name and should be taught in Universities, among its abusers, so we, and others, might learn about our own unnatural behavior. We can then ascribe it to those who do it and force introspection and self-awareness. It infiltrates politics which we see clearly in this upcoming election.

This endemic problem is the origin of Glick’s assertions and observations. Imagine a long suffering people who refuse to exact a death penalty on those who kill their mothers, sisters and children. And then to grant freedom to such killers so they might do it again. How do we make sense of such disturbing actions that will, with certainty, cause more Israeli deaths.

I see it among Jews here in Aspen. Liberal thought and flawed views nobly justified that hurt us. Most do not grasp it here in this elite bastion of Institute advanced ideas.

Perhaps the best example we know so well: The New York Times, a once venerable paper, owned by Jews, run by Jews in a city steeped in rich Jewish culture, heritage and history that maligns its own while defending brutal enemies sworn to wipe us out…..Many Manhattan Jews, mostly liberal, accept it with few questions or opposition……Elaine

Sandler sent the above to Glick whose response was:

You are certainly right. You might find Ken Levin ’s book, The Oslo Syndrome of particular interest. We are a pathological people. And, actually, we always have been which is why the bible says that our haters and destroyers will emerge from our ranks.
Thanks for reaching out.

New Plans for U.S. Cyber Defense

Palestinian Refugees’ Conference Peddles Propaganda

“This weekend, the “Popular Palestinian Conference 2008” will be held in Chicago, and if past is prologue, a slew of anti-Israel propaganda will be part of the repertoire. The organizers make no effort to conceal their nefarious intentions, titling one of the workshops [emphasis added], “Inserting Palestine into High School Curricula in the US & Empowering Students to Challenge Dominant Narratives” and subtitling the conference, “Palestinians in the US: Reclaiming Our Voice, Asserting Our Narrative.” Unfortunately, this “narrative” is a false one in which Israel is the oppressor, the Palestinians its perpetual victims, and the United States an accomplice in crime.” Read more
